Leeds Future You nursing partnership wins NHS award

Smiling student nurse holding papersThe Future You Partnership - an Open University, Leeds Beckett University and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust programme - has won the 2020 North East and Yorkshire NHS Parliamentary Award for Wellbeing at Work.

The programme provides an apprenticeship route for both experienced and aspiring healthcare workers in Leeds looking to launch their career as a Nursing Associate or Registered Nurse.  While working as Trainee Nursing Associates within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, students will study for a Foundation Degree and gain practical skills through work placements.  After working for a year as a Nursing Associate, Future You programme students then have the option to progress to the two-year Apprentice Nurse Programme to achieve registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse.

Jill Rounce, OU Staff Tutor in Nursing, said, “This is an innovative project which we are very pleased to be a part of. Leeds Teaching Hospitals have created a wonderful career pathway for healthcare staff and it is great to work with Leeds Becket University staff in the delivery of the professional programmes within these pathways”

Judges for the regional round of the NHS Parliamentary Awards selected winners from over 700 nominations across 10 categories.  In July 2021, the partnership will go head-to-head with other winners from across the country to be judged by a national panel made up of senior leaders representing NHS staff and patients at a ceremony in the House of Commons.

The Leeds Future You Partnership was launched in September 2020, with a second intake of 43 students starting in January 2021.  Students who opt to study through The Open University will have access to excellent online study materials, the support of local tutors and access to community forums.  Under supervision, students will be able to put what they learn into practice in the workplace immediately for the benefit of service users.
