Collection of video data is often used when studying how people interact with each other and with technology or artefacts. It can provide research communities with a powerful way to collect, share and analyse complex processes of human interaction. This session will provide a brief overview of how video collection and analysis may be used in educational technology settings, and present three different approaches to video analysis, based on Erickson’s (2006) guidelines:

  • Grounded approach (whole-to-part inductive)
  • Attention content and interaction pattern approach (part-to-whole inductive)
  • Critical incident approach (manifest content)

An introduction to this work can be found on ORO. The session will include some resources for participants to take away and use in their own work.
