Costs and help with funding

Methods of calculating costs will vary from agency to agency but the main costs employers need to take into account are:

  • OU fees. Fees are payable on a module-by-module basis shortly after the modules begin in February or October. For further information on fees, see the qualification description.
  • replacement costs (to replace staff on study leave or external placement).
  • practice learning provision. (All agencies providing placements are eligible for funding from the SSSC, see below)
  • any travel and subsistence costs agreed by the agency
  • OU set books. Approximately £100-£120 will be required for the purchase of set books.

Practice learning funding

Each year the Programme receives money from the Scottish Social Services Council which is distributed to agencies providing practice learning opportunities. Payment will be made by the University on confirmation that the PLO has been completed. In 2021 the rates are £18 per day for statutory agencies and £28 per day for voluntary and independent agencies. Evidence of charitable or company status has to be provided in order for payments to be made at the higher rate.

Please note that funding does not apply to the preparation for practice days at Stage Two.
