Professional biography

Johanna is a full-time PhD student within the Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology (CREET).

Johanna’s research focuses on game-based learning, specifically looking at virtual worlds and Massively Multiplayer Open Online Games (MMOGs). The research examines group dynamics and engagement within MMOGs and how group performance impacts creativity. Using a mixed method approach, the research aims to illuminate how creative learning processes and outcomes are facilitated by both solitary and group flow and how risk-taking and varying levels of group interdependence impact these processes and outcomes.

Johanna received her MA in Sociology and her MRes in Social Research Methods at the University of Aberdeen where she examined gamer sub-culture within Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games using an ethnographic approach. She further went on to look at flow experiences across different game mediums; both non-digital games, sports and digital games. To further her interest in technology she completed a MSc in Software Technology and Network Management at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, where her software project involved designing and implementing a graphical steganography application using Least Significant Bit (LSB) and whitespace algorithms.
