Professional biography

RNLD, SCLD, ENB 978, BA (Hons), MSc, PCTHE, TCH, Oxford Brookes University Associate Teaching Fellow, AMBCS.

I am an experienced Registered Nurse (Learning Disabilities) (RNLD) (NMC), qualified nurse lecturer (TCH) and masters-level graduate with varied clinical, teaching and management experience, with strong communication and information technology skills; Associate Member of the Chartered Institute for IT (AMBCS).

During my years as a registered nurse I have developed a specialist interest in the health needs of people with a learning/ intellectual disability in particular those individuals who have Profound Intellectual and/or Multiple Disabilities (PIMD/ PMLD). 

Research interests

In my early research career my focus has been on how nurses use eLearning in Professional Education I also have an interest in how technology can widen access to health information and developments in digital health literacy in particular Service User and Carer digital health literacy.

I am a member of the Social History of Learning Disability (SHLD) Research Group; the Carer Research and Knowledge Exchange Network (CAREN) research group and The Nursing Research Group.

My primary interest is in the health of people with a learning/intellectual disability.

Teaching interests

I am a Lecturer in nursing and an enthusiast and advocate of Technology Enhanced Learning.

Embedding Learning Disability Nursing theory and practice within the curriculum.

OU student wins Care Apprentice Award

Heather always wanted to be a mental health nurse, having worked as a carer for a number of years. When she was given the chance by her employer to study for an Open University course in Health Care Practise, she grabbed the opportunity. Earlier this year, Heather was awarded the Care Apprentice Award at the National Care Awards, as Carers Week begins, she talks about her journey with The OU.
