Profile summary

Professional biography

I am a Registered Adult Nurse, Lecturer in Nursing and Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor). I have a MSc in both Health Professional Education and Specialist Community Public Health Nursing, PG. Cert Leading Service Improvement, BSc(Hons) Health Studies and a Diploma in Oncology (ENB237). I successfully attained my Senior Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy. I am in the second year of my Professional Doctorate programme.

I have over 30 years if clinical, teaching and research experience in nursing. My clinical experiences have been within acute adult clinical haematology units, non-surgical oncology and community health visiting. I have a broad experience of both teaching and practice education outside of the Open University. I was a Clinical Educator in non-surgical oncology for 9 years. I have facilitated and delivered both in house educational programmes and experience of partnership working between clinical service and academic organisations to develop programmes of study to meet service and academic needs. In collaboration with the University of Bradford I helped research, write and deliver their Haematology and BMT module and also guest lectured at Leeds Beckett University on the Specialist Community Public Health programme.

I have worked for the Open University for 19 years now as a Programme Tutor and more recently as a Module Tutor. I joined the Open University on a permanent basis in July 2020 as a Staff Tutor before moving to the central academic team in 2023.

Current Work includes:

  • Module Chair for K*234
  • Associate Lead for Apprenticeship (Nursing)
  • Lecturer in Nursing (Adult)
  • Module team member on K*211, K*325; K*326-9

Research interests

I am currently a member of the Open University Open Thanatology group and the Nursing Research and Scholarship group.

Having worked in cancer care services for over twenty years I am interested in how we develop and support this workforce. Globally cancer is the leading cause of cancer and with statistics now showing that 1 in 2 people will suffer with cancer in their lifetime it is realistic to assume that this would impact nursing in all fields of practice. I stared my Professional Doctorate programme with the Open University on 1st October 2022 and the focus of my research topic is the pre-registration nursing curricula and to consider if it prepares students to meet the needs of cancer patients.

Survey and evaluation of End-of-life Doula UK. Leeds CCG have commissioned a pilot of this service. As part of the Open Thanatology group, I am involved in this ongoing research project. End-of-life Doula UK provided £2000 research funding/ RESDEV funding awarded 11/02/22/ KTV funding £9,990 awarded 11/07/2022. Following ethical approval, the survey has been designed and implemented. The project has been extended into 2024 and I am supporting this through consultancy work.

I am part of a research working group undertaking a systematic review looking at Young lives interrupted by malignant melanoma: exploring the experiences within a relational context’ (TYAC grant 2022/23).
