Professional biography

Kieron’s research interests are within the broad field of inclusive education, often focusing  on how  teaching approaches or services  can be developed to successfully support  diverse groups of learners. He supervises research within  this area and  has a particular interest in addressing issues for those who might be  stigmatized and excluded within educational systems.  This has encompassed examining the relationship between new technologies and the notion of learning difficulties, developing practical pedagogies for inclusive classrooms and researching the impact of epistemological beliefs on classroom practice. Currently he is working with colleagues in  East Java  to develop  Signalong  Indonesia,  a signed communication approach to support inclusive classrooms and school communities.

 

Research interests

Kieron supervises and examines research within the field of inclusive and special education, and has led and contributed to many funded research projects within this area. He is director of the Childhood, Youth and Sport Group research cluster.

Teaching interests

Kieron teaches in the area of inclusive and special education, and developmental and educational psychology. This has included chairing the production and presentation of a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules such as E243: Learning From Each Other and E848: Researching Inclusive Education: Values into Practice. He has been Programme Leader for the Open University’s Doctorate in Education and is currently working on the development of E219 The Psychology of Childhood and Youth, and DE300 Investigating Psychology.  He has worked as academic advisor on  televison and radio series that focus on issues related to inclusive education and child development.

Victoria Cumming received her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Work and was also given the Andrew Cornwell Award 2017 for the highest-performing graduate in the social work programme at the Open University's degree ceremony
