Professional biography

I have a BSc in Human Psychology and a PhD, both from the University of Loughborough. I worked as a research fellow first at the University of Sussex then at the OU, where I have now been a Lecturer since 2010.

Research interests

I am Director of the Children's Research Centre and lead a multidisciplinary team in developing and evaluating resources to support young people to conduct their own social science research. Also, I am interested in educational dialogue in the classroom.

My research focus is on technology-enhanced learning. Current work includes the development and evaluation of MyShout! - a website to support the self-directed learning of young researchers, and Talk Factory - an application for use in classrooms to support argumentation.

I supervise three EdD students.

Teaching interests

I am currently on a three year secondment as EdD Programme Leader.

I have experience of developing and chairing developmental psychology modules at undergraduate and Masters level.

Impact and engagement

All of my research involves stakeholders, is collaborative, and focuses on maximising the potential to make a difference to the lives of young people. In 2015 I received an 'Engaged Research' award from the OU in recognition of my work with young researchers, who have gone on to communicate their research findings to a range pf publics that include charities, an MP, the Children's Commisioner for England, local authorities, and parents.

I have worked with Girl Guiding UK to develop a new Guide badge - Streets Ahead - that is awarded on completion of a community research project. To date, around 10,000 Guides have been awarded the badge.

Talk Factory software has been used across a wide range of UK schools.

External collaborations

I have worked with teachers and pupils in many schools, Girl Guiding, the BBC, Channel 4 Learning, and software companies.

I am currently exploring the potential for collaborative research on Talk Factory with a school in UAE.
