Professional biography

I am a full-time PhD student with the Faculty of Health and Social Care.  My project aims to explore the social construction of quality diabetes care appointments for adults with mild-to-moderate learning disabilities, their supporters and healthcare professionals supervised by Dr Liz Tilley and Professor Cathy Lloyd.

I have a BSc (hons) in Psychology from the Open University.  I have also completed an MSc in Research Methods in Psychology with Anglia Ruskin University (Cambridge) which included a dissertation on discursive constructions of responsibility for diabetes management by adults with mild-to-moderate learning disabilities and their family and paid supporters (supervised by Dr Mick Finlay).

Before starting my PhD I supported various research projects in Cambridge, including Cambridgeshire & Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust's PROMISE (PROactive Management of Integrated Services and Environments) project.  PROMISE is a collaborative mixed methods project which aims to eliminate reliance on physical restraint in mental healthcare. 

I am an active member of the Open University Psychological Society, Chairing the Cambridge regional branch and serving on the national committee as Editor of the Society's newsletter News & Views.  I am also a member of the Social History of Learning Disability Group.

Victoria Cumming received her Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Work and was also given the Andrew Cornwell Award 2017 for the highest-performing graduate in the social work programme at the Open University's degree ceremony
