Professional biography

I am a Lecturer in Childhood and Youth and have many interests, within this field and  with regard to broader arenas which impact on children and young people, their parents and families. 

Much of my work has taken a focus on supporting children, young people, families and communities which are socially and economically disadvantaged. 

I am also interested in philosophies of education and how they influence the lives, aspirations and long-term trajectories of individuals and communities.

My aim is to support open access to forms of care and education which support everyone to reach their potential in life and support them to acheive equality and their rights. 

I have a interest in global migration and how we support people who have been displaced to achieve success in their lives. 

I am also interested in the Prevent Strategy and what this means for individuals, communities and organisations charged with supporting its delivery.

I am interested in children and young people in contact with the Police and how we perceive children and young people in society and what this means for what we do with them, when they come into contact with the Police and the Criminal Justice System.

I have an interest in supporting learners who come to University as mature students to support them to acheive success in their academic careers and how this can be acheived.

Student Stories : What are the experiences of students, before and whilst attending The Open University where  they are identified as disabled or BAME and how do we best support them to acheive success?

Level One Assessment: How can we develop our assessment strategies at Level One  to support student success?



Pedagogy of Poverty : How can we support primary teachers to best support children who are socially and economically disadvantaed?

Teaching interests

Children and Young People's rights and engagement in policy and services to support the development of services that they are able to access, are supportive and meet their self-identified needs

Children, young people, parents and families in all areas, and in particular those in social and economic need and how we work to enable the opportunity of equity to services, support the development of positive personal, social and economic outcome and engagement with the political process.

Global migration

Philosophies of education, formal and informal: Why do we do what we do and is it effective?  What are we aiming to acheive and why? What might be alternative philosophies of education we might consider adopting and why might we adopt them?
