Professional biography

Dr Sarah Earle is Director of the Open University's Priority Research Area in Health & Wellbeing.

She is a medical sociologist with an interest in reproduction, sex and health and is a member of the School's reproductive and sexual heatlh research theme. Sarah is especially interested in the politics of infant feeding, contraception and fertility, and the reproductive and sexual rights of disabled people. Sarah joined the Open University in January 2005.

Research interests

Sarah is particularly interested in reproductive and sexual health and Convened the British Sociological Association’s Human Reproduction Study Group for over 10 years. She is the social sciences sub-editor of the international journal Human Fertility.

Teaching interests

Sarah Earle has considerable experience of teaching in higher education and is interested in how sociology can contribute to improving health and social care practice and education. Before joining the Open University in 2005, Sarah worked at the University of Northampton (2001-2004), Birmingham City University (1999-2000) and Coventry University (1993-1999).

Impact and engagement

Sarah is a founding member of the Sexuality Alliance, a multi-professional and multi-agency organisation that supports inclusion for young people and adults with life-limiting and life shortening conditions. The Sexulity Alliance has worked with Together for Short Lives to produce Talking about sex, sexuality and relationships: Guidance and Standards for those working with young people with life-limiting or life threatening conditions and can be downloaded for free here.
