I am a first year PhD student and am interested in children’s oral language in classroom role-play at 4-5 years. My research aims to explore how children use language collaboratively in role-play and what aspects of language learning and learning through language might be seen to be taking place during role-play interaction. The study is underpinned by the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics and I plan to look at lexicogrammatical patterns and the use of Appraisal. For the PhD study I am using my work from my MRes (completed in Sept 2012) as a pilot study and now plan to investigate this fascinating topic in more depth. My MRes research demonstrated the capability of the SFL framework in providing insights into children's language use.
