Professional biography

Sheila is Professor of Social Gerontology.  She is a professorial member of the Faculty Research Sub-Committee; the REF group and the PG research supervisor's group as well as a long-term member of the OU Human Participants and Materials Ethics Committee.

Sheila is a Course Team Member for K101: Understanding Health and Social Care as well as the new course in production: K319: Ageing, Adlthood and the Life Course where she is co-editing the course reader.  She currently supervises two full-time and one part-time post graduate students.

External to the OU, Sheila acts as a link between the British Society of Gerontology (BSG) and the International Longievity Centre-UK which is linked to the House of Lords.  She recently cam to the end of a 6 year term on the executive if the BSG.  She continues as the Faculty representative on the Coalition for Better Care.

Research interests

Sheila is a Member of the Centre for Ageing and Biographical Studies (CABS).  She was also a foudner member of the Centre for Environmental and Social Studies in Ageing (CESSA) at London Metropolitan University during the 1980s.

She has an on-going interest in the field of environment and ageing leading to gerontological research in community participation; quality of life in care settings; the context of care across the life-course, and the regulation of social care services for older people. Other interests include: age discrimination; everyday living in later life - cooking , meal-times, gardening.

She has a particular interest in participative research.  She is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the British Society of Gerontology.

In  2003, she completed an ESRC funded study in the Growing Older programme entitled 'Environment and Identity in Later Life: a cross-setting study'  with colleagues Caroline Holland (FHSC) and Leonie Kellaher (London Metropolitan University), and in 2006, an integenerational study of 'Social Interaction in Urban Public Places' with Andrew Clark, Caroline Holland and Jeanne Katz funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation within their Public Places programme.

Following participation in a cross research council funded sandpit on 'Nutrition in Later Life' (2008)  supported through the New Dynamics of Ageing Programme (NDA), Sheila went on to gain an external grant within the last project call for NDA on a study entitled 'Transitions in Kitchen Living' - a collaborative study with members of the School of Design from Loughborough University. The study began in Sept. 2009 and runs until summer 2011.
