Supporting carers: the social worker

This film focuses on the work of Nicola James, a social worker for Surrey County Council. Nicola works with disabled young adults and their carers. She introduces us to Caroline Hunter, who cares for her son, who is autistic and has severe learning disabilities. Nicola’s work with the Hunter family demonstrates how considering the needs of both the service user and the carer can have a positive impact on the whole family.

It also sets out the benefits that result from students working with service users and carers, with users and carers describing how this leads to improved practice and how students explaining the value of learning about the realities of people's lives. This film focuses on Rose Fernandes who cares for her mother, who has dementia, and her daughter, who is autistic and has learning difficulties. She uses direct payments to pay for people to help with her daughter’s care, but for her mother she relies on agency staff. She finds this method tough as the agency staff only come at certain times, leaving her to care for her mum alone throughout the night. Meanwhile, her daughter Crystal receives much more flexible care, but direct payments leave her with a lot of paperwork to do. Note: This film is no longer available.

Food for thought: people with learning disabilities and family carers share their experiences of healthy eating

In this DVD people with learning disabilities and their family carers tell their story of healthy eating. Their stories show how some people and families have overcome barriers to healthy eating. As well as healthy eating, the DVD also covers enjoying cooking and eating, having choice and control about what you eat, where you eat and who you eat with. It shows that healthy eating works best when everyone works together.

Role of the home carer

Care workers are introduced to the concepts of access and application of policies and procedures, the organisation’s aims & values and working in partnership with other workers and the service user. It also considers the responsibilities a care worker has, as set out in the General Social Care Council’s Code of Practice for Social Care Workers. This video will help them answer such questions as: What standard of conduct is expected of me? What tasks and activities will I be expected to carry out? Where do I go for advice, information and support?

Short films of short break carers providing short breaks to disabled children and young people are presented to highlight the rewards of becoming a short break carer. The films look at care in different settings, including: family-based short break carers; contract (fee paid) carers; sitters; outreach workers; and befrienders. The carers explain what they do, the support and training they receive and why they enjoy it.
