Hidden from View: The experiences of young carers in England

There are 166,363 young carers in England, according to latest census data released on 16 May 2013. The Children’s Society believes this could be just the tip of the iceberg. Many young carers remain hidden from official sight for a host of reasons, including family loyalty, stigma, bullying, not knowing where to go for support. Some young carers are as young as five years old.

Working towards full participation: a report on how social work degree courses, which started in 2003, have begun to involve service users and carers in social work training

The introduction of the new social work degree, which had its first intake in September 2003, provided an important and exciting opportunity to make participation in social work education a reality by requiring that service users and carers be involved in all aspects of course design and delivery, including the selection and assessment of students. This is the annual quality- assurance report (AQAR) to be compiled by the General Social Care Council (GSCC).

Carers in the region: a profile of the North East

The Carers in the Region profiles have been commissioned by the Department of Health to provide information about carers at the regional level for each of the 9 English regions. These profiles include data on the number and characteristics of carers in each region as well as information about carer health and well-being. This profile provides information covering the North East region. In 2001 there were 275,813 carers in the North East region, which is 11% of the region’s population.

New Deal for Carers : revision of the Prime Minister's 1999 Strategy on Carers : Equalities Task Force report

This is a report to government. The Task Force membership comprised representation from central and local government, professional bodies and third sector organisations.

The Taskforce feels strongly that the recognition of carers role and contribution is a priority and essential to achieving equality for carers, and this is reflected in the recommendations.

Supporting carers to care: report by the Comptroller and Auditor General

There are six million unpaid carers in the UK who look after relatives, friends, children or older people who are sick or disabled. The number of carers is growing and the Department for Work and Pensions (the Department) estimates that the number of carers it supports will increase by about a quarter by 2014-15. The nature of care obligations varies. Care may be provided throughout life, during a chronic condition, over distinct periods, or towards the end of a person’s life. Appendix One provides examples of caring responsibilities from our survey of carers.

Services to support carers of people with mental health problems : overview report for the National Co-ordinating Centre for NHS Service Delivery and Organisation R & D (NCCSDO)

The aims of the study were to summarise available research evidence, to identify key gaps in existing knowledge and to identify priorities for further research in the area of services to support carers. The literature review examined and summarised evidence from published and unpublished literature (both UK and international) between 1985 and 2001 about effective and cost-effective services to support carers.
