Professional biography

Eileen Scanlon is Regius Professor of Open Education, an award she received for her exceptional contributions to the fields of educational technology and public engagement with the sciences. Her award also reflects the exceptionally high quality of teaching and research within The Institute of Educational Technology (IET).

Eileen has a background in science communication teaching and research, and educational technology. She holds a number of senior management roles and visiting posts. She is Associate Director of Research and Innovation in the Institute of Educational Technology at the Open University, UK. As Associate Director she has institutional responsibility for developing research strategy in educational technology. Eileen is also Visiting Professor in Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh and a Trustee at Bletchley Park. Previously, she has held visiting academic appointments at University of California (Berkeley) and the University of London.

Eileen began her full-time OU career in 1975, working in the Deanery of The Science Faculty. She completed her PhD in 1990 studying cognitive models of physics problem solving. Eileen has worked in IET since 1978 where she has held a number of roles, including Director of the Computers and Learning Research Group (CALRG). She was also Director of the interfaculty centre of excellence, the Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology (CREET). She is currently directing openTEL, which is an Open University priority research area which brings together people from across the University who are conducting research in technology enhanced learning.

Eileen has contributed to a number of postgraduate teaching projects, including leading roles in the development of Contemporary issues in science learning and Communicating science in the information age.

Research interests

Eileen has extensive research experience on educational technology projects, some of which are summarized in McAndrew, Scanlon and Clow (2010). Funding sources for her research have included: The European Commission; The Economic and Social Research Council; The Hewlett Foundation; The Higher Education Funding Council for England; Research Councils UK; and The Joint Information Systems Committee. Her research funding track record evidences strong links with research users and beneficiaries that contribute to both current and future projects.

Eileen has published extensively in the fields of Technology Enhanced Learning and science communication. Her research publications are hosted in the OU’s Open Research Online Repository.

Eileen has developed research interests in a number of projects:

  • that explore aspects of digital scholarship to develop open educational resources (e.g. through The OER Research Hub);
  • that investigate science learning in formal and informal settings concentrating on the development of an inquiry learning pedagogy (e.g. The Personal Inquiry project);
  • that develop innovative approaches to evaluation (e.g. games based learning, such as The xDelia project, MASELTOV and Juxtalearn); and
  • where research has informed the development of an online laboratory for practical science teaching (OpenScience Laboratory, a collaborative activity with the Wolfson Foundation).

In addition she has a role as Co-Investigator on the RCUK funded Schools University Partnership project ‘Engaging opportunities connecting young people with contemporary research and researchers’, Eileen is also a Co-Investigator on the OU’s RCUK-funded Catalyst for Public Engagement with Research project, ‘An open research university’.

Teaching interests

Eileen has a long standing interest in science education demonstrated through her teaching on science communication. She contributed to the MSc in Science receiving (receiving an OU Teaching Award in 2002), through  working on several modules: SEH 806 Contemporary Issues in Learning Science (OU Teaching Award in 2004), S804 Communicating Science (to 2008), and SH 804 Communicating Science in the Information Age (from 2009)

Eileen's research work also applies to teaching, in particular considering the use of technology to support formal and informal science learning, and in the development of research methods in postgraduate teaching.

Her interest in journeys between formal and informal learning has been developed in two further activities

  • leadership of the FutureLearn academic network (FLAN), a network of partners sharing research insights on their experiences of teaching and researching Massive Open Online Courses
  • development of work on Citizen Science Inquiry.

Impact and engagement

Recent keynotes have included a presentation on Technology Enhanced Learning Research at NSFCL17 in Washington,  and one on critical issues in educational technology for the British Educational Research Association SIG meeting on, Educational Technology at the Open University.

External collaborations

Eileen is co-editor of the Journal of Imteractive Multimedia in Education.

Close-Up on Heritage Language Learners: An Inquiry project
RoleStart dateEnd dateFunding source
Lead11 Jan 201630 Sep 2016BRITAC British Academy

Project working with two community schools to organise activities designed to boost young learners' motivation and commitment towards studying Modern Greek at advanced level GCSE, A'Level, provide access to cultural experiences, involve learners in inquiry learning and develop communication skills through the use of mobile and web technologies. In the longer term it aims to raise awareness of the learners' origins, enable them to take an active role in their learning and broaden their understanding of how social science research is carried out.

Co-investigator01 Jan 201631 Dec 2016RCUK Research Councils UK

In March 2015, RCUK extended the funding to projects participating in the School-University Partnerships Initiative by one year. The purpose of the 12-month extension (Jan-Dec 2016) is to enable our partnership with the Denbigh Teaching School Alliance to develop a particular emphasis on embedding and sustainability in the final phase of the Initiative.

Co-investigator01 Oct 201528 Feb 2022LEVERHULME The Leverhulme Trust

The OU has been awarded a major grant from The Leverhulme Trust to enable 18 new PhD scholarships to drive forward knowledge of Open World Learning. The focus will be on how to increase access to education for all across the globe using new technologies and innovative approaches. The Leverhulme Trust has awarded a grant of £1,050,000 to The OU's Institute of Educational Technology (IET) and Faculty of Education and Language Studies (FELS) to fund 15 full-time, three-year doctoral scholarships over the next five years. In addition to this, the OU will fund a further three scholars from low and middle-income economies, taking the total number of places up to 18. Managed by the Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology (CREET), the purpose of these scholarships is to explore the factors that support or impede inclusive approaches to learning, for example around the use of new communication methods such as social networking and devices such as mobile phones and tablets.

Learning science and computing through juxtaposition performance in video making (H-11-023-AA)
RoleStart dateEnd dateFunding source
Co-investigator01 Oct 201230 Sep 2015EC (European Commission): FP (inc. Horizon Europe, H2020, ERC)

School and University students studying science and technology often encounter barriers to their understanding of complex concepts. However, unlike in the arts, students are frequently poorly motivated to overcome these barriers. Focusing on ‘performance’ JuxtaLearn will provoke student curiosity in science and technology through creative film making and editing activities. Computational identification of students’ barriers to conceptual understanding will be overcome by scaffolded creative application of concepts in activities juxtaposed to traditional understanding. State of the art technologies will support students transferable reflections focusing on two pedagogical approaches: juxtaposition performance and reflective performance. Juxtaposition performance: JuxtaLearn ICMAs (Interactive Computer Marked Assessments) will support students’ identification of threshold concepts that are their own personal barriers to understanding. Students’ understanding will be enhanced by them creating personal performances through application of a theory in a formal activity and then again in a creative juxtaposed activity (e.g. physics used in music DJ-ing, chemistry occurring in kitchens, possible evolution of an alien race). New media and learning analytics of public video resources will facilitate student creative inspiration and further conceptual insight and understanding. Reflective performance: State of the art systems for automated and personalised film making and editing will support curiosity and creative expression. A deeper understanding will be reinforced through scaffolding reflections on essential elements in applying the theory. Students will, for example, be supported in instigating reflective decisions on what to film, how to film it and what and where to edit. Public displays will enable sharing and commenting of these performances thus encouraging public curiosity and a ‘buzz’ around specific complex concepts.
