I am a lecturer in the Institute of Educational Technology, sharing my time between research and supporting Open University courses. I'm interested in informal and self-directed learning, mobile and locational teaching and learning practices, community based learning and hacker/maker cultures.
I am currently working on the following research projects:
MAZI - exploring community developed ("DIY") computer networks to support citizen engagement and collective awareness ( http://www.mazizone.eu ). In this project we are investigating how community owned and developed computer networks might solve local social issues and sustainable living. This project is funded by the EU's Horizon2020 CAPS framework (Jan 2016 - Dec 2018). I am working with Dr. Gareth Davies and we're working closely with community technologists SPC on a pilot study in Deptford, London, 'Creeknet'. The Open University is responsible for meta-evaluation of the four project pilot studies (Deptford, Zurich, Berlin, Kokkinopilos).
Recent Projects
The following projects have been recently completed, but I am still writing up the findings and interested to find ways to continue the work - get in touch!
RE:FORM - "Reimagining Education for the Future Of Redistributed Manufacturing" ( http://www.open.ac.uk/blogs/reform/ ). In this 2015 project we explored how Open University design students can work remotely over the internet with distant trainee fabrication learners ('makers') based in MAKLab, Glasgow to collaboratively design and build full scale chair prototypes that are fabricated using industrial CNC routers. This project was funded by the Royal College of Art and EPSRC in their exploration of redistributed manufacturing supply chains, and our approach was to look at the education and training challenges (Future Makespaces in Re-Distributed Manufacturing, EPSRC (EP/M017591/1) ). I'm working with colleagues to further explore making in community settings, and also how we might develop the RE:FORM work to support design-based university curricula.
SALSA - "Sensors and Apps for Languages in Smart Areas" (http://www.open.ac.uk/blogs/salsa/), exploring location triggered language learning. In SALSA (2014 -2015), we explored how to trigger language resources around the city, and to understand their effectiveness as a learning resource, as well as identifying how language learners use smartphones more generally. We have also begun to consider how this approach might be used to encourage the exploration of cultural heritage of cities by tourists and locals, working with colleagues in the MAZI project (see above). This project was funded by the Open University, building on the MK:Smart project exploring how Milton Keynes can develop as a smart city
MASELTOV - "Mobile Assistance for Social Inclusion and Empowerment of Immigrants with Persuasive Learning Technologies and Social Network Services" (http://www.maseltov.eu). This was a three year EU Framework 7 project running from January 2012 to December 2014. In this project, I worked as a researcher investigating how incidental learning might support recent immigrants with social inclusion and language learning, devising an incidental learning framework as part of the OU team. We considered how feedback and progress indicators might create coherent learning journeys from fragmented episodes, and how multisensory contextual support can support situated learning.

In August 2018 a week long scoping exercise assessed the mental health training needs of multi-disciplinary health practitioners in Guyana. From this, we developed an innovative research strategy and commitment to develop a community-based mental health improvement programme capable of being adopted by Guyana and other Low- and Middle-Income Countries with similar socio-economic conditions. Our approach focuses on promoting community mental health resilience through participatory digital technologies that build on The Open University’s global leadership role in distance learning. The research and development phases will address embedded cultural attitudes and norms that frequently prevent healthcare practitioners implementing successful and sustainable interventions in such environments, while promoting existing positive practices. Our research will: 1. Establish a baseline of social, environmental and mental health status within three case study communities; 2. Co-design with community members, practitioners and agencies a capacity building programme for community-based mental health improvement in readiness for a period of engagement within the three case study communities focusing on improving mental health resilience through our ‘community owned solutions’ approach. 3. Support, through a process of action research, the practitioners as they apply and evaluate the resilience/‘community owned solutions’ approach within the case study communities, and monitor intervention impact with respect to baseline state. 4. Apply lessons learnt to strengthen the practitioner capacity building programme for major out scaling within Guyana (through the University of Guyana's BSc in Mental Health Nursing) and in other LMICs. By aiming to establish a BSc honours degree in Mental Health Nursing as an outcome the project, we have a clear exit strategy for our research which will enthuse and motivate engagement across Government, Public Health and Education sectors. It will build on and develop existing practices to create a pathway towards the aspiration that will excite both innovation and education amongst practitioners and policy formers. |

This international, nine partner EU funded project will explore the potential of community built (“DIY”) computer networks to develop neighbourhood cohesion, knowledge sharing, and sustainable living in urban environments. The project will develop a software and hardware toolkit for community activists and test this in four pilots across Europe, based on pairings of academic and local community partners, and developing local services alongside community representatives. The Open University will play a leading role in a UK based case study working alongside a London based community computing organisation, and provide expertise around community informatics. The project has a multidisciplinary aspect bringing together researchers and practitioners from from the fields of computer networking, human-computer interaction, urban design, architecture and community informatics. |

RE:FORM (‘Reimagining Education for the Future of Redistributed Manufacturing’) has been awarded £25K by the Royal College of Art to carry out a feasibility study as part of the larger RCA EPSRC funded project on ‘Future Makespaces in Distributed Manufacturing’ (http://futuremakespaces.rca.ac.uk/ ). The project is a collaboration between the Open University and MAKLab, a makerspace in Glasgow. The project aims to (1) Understand the key challenges faced by makespaces in providing effective and relevant education and training for redistributed manufacturing in the UK (2) to explore the potential of university- makespace collaborations to fulfil the education and training requirements for effective distributed manufacturing in the UK; and (3) Investigate the role of accreditation in supporting career trajectories in redistributed manufacturing. This will be achieved through (a) a series of workshops bringing together participants from education, makerspaces, and industry; (b) a ‘summer school’ pairing Open University design students with vocational learners at MAKlab to collaboratively design and fabricate furniture prototypes, communicating via the internet, and (c) a number of interviews with industry representatives. |
