Children, young people, parenthood and families

The Children, young people, parenthood and families research group has a focus on social research into the lives of children and young people, parenting and families, which links to key policy and professional practice across the health and social care sector. Our particular areas of expertise are around the themes of gender (including men’s experiences of social care and child protection services); ‘different childhoods’; mental health; professional practice including work with boys and young men; gendered and LGBT+ identities for young people; sexual health and abortion; transitions to adulthood; youth justice; child health outcomes and children’s geographies. We have also carried out research on parenting including the experiences of young fathers, social fatherhood, fathers in prison, maternal employment (including maternal feeding practices) and family/work balance; as well as parenting at a ‘distance’ where a child is in residential care.
