Investigation into the needs of informal caregivers of stroke survivors in Antananarivo, Madagascar

Background: Stroke is the second leading cause of disability in Madagascar, half of those affected are <50. All treatment must be paid for; however, 92% live on <2€/day, so informal caregivers are very important. Method: In 2017, 15 caregivers of stroke survivors were interviewed by a medical student, in the rehabilitation department of the university hospital in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Family Caregiver Training Program (FCTP): A Randomized Controlled Trial

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Family Caregiver Training Program (FCTP) for caregivers of people with dementia.METHOD. A random assignment control group research design with a 3-mo follow-up was implemented.RESULTS. Thirty-six family caregivers of people with dementia demonstrated an increase in activity of daily living (ADL) knowledge (p < .001) and maintenance of that knowledge 3 mo posttest. Caregiver confidence, regardless of group assignment, improved; however, it was not maintained.

Initiating activities of daily living contributes to well-being in people with dementia and their carers

Objective: Problems with everyday functioning are linked to reduced well-being in people with dementia (PwD) and their carers. However, previous research has almost solely investigated the performance of everyday activities, and global functioning without analysing individual activities. This study explored how deficits in initiating and performing individual activities were associated with carer burden and poorer quality of life of carers and PwD.

Formal and informal long-term care in the community: interlocking or incoherent systems?

Help with activities of daily living for people in the community is provided through formal services (public and private) and informal (often unpaid) care. This paper investigates how these systems interlock and who is at risk of unmet need. It begins by mapping differences between OECD countries in the balance between formal and informal care, before giving a detailed breakdown for the UK. New analysis of UK Family Resources Survey data for 2012/13 and 2013/14 suggests high levels of unmet need.

Caregiving setting and Baby Boomer caregiver stress processes: Findings from the National Study of Caregiving (NSOC)

The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the caregiving setting relates to caregiving experience among Baby Boomer caregivers (CGs). Based on a secondary data analysis (the National Study of Caregiving, N = 782), compared with CGs providing care to an older adult living in the community, CGs to older adults in non-NH residential care settings reported better emotional well-being, self-rated health, and relationship quality and less provision of assistance older adults with daily activities.

Independence and cognition post-stroke and its relationship to burden and quality of life of family caregivers

Background: Stroke is a chronic disease responsible for changes in the functional capacity of the patients. Patient care is usually provided by family caregivers, but with great burden and negative impact on their quality of life.

Objectives: (1) To investigate whether a correlation existed between the levels of independence and cognition in stroke patients and the burden and quality of life of their caregivers; (2) to assess whether periods of injury, rehabilitation and care, and age of the stroke patients interfered with these correlations.

Caregiving-related needs of family caregivers of older Singaporeans

Objective: To describe the extent and correlates of caregiving‐related needs among family caregivers of Singaporeans aged 75+ with ≥1 activity of daily living limitations (care‐recipients).

Methods: National survey data of 1181 care‐recipient/caregiver dyads were used. Caregiver's report (yes/no) of 16 needs was assessed. Care‐recipient and caregiver correlates of each need were determined through logistic regression analysis.

Comparison of psychosocial and medical characteristics of patients with dementia and their primary informal caregivers between inpatient and day clinic treatment

Background Caregiver burden is one of the most common reasons for hospitalization of patients with dementia. However, changes of location are not recommended for patients with dementia and associated with negative outcomes for patients with dementia. As there is yet a lack of outpatient treatment options, this study explores psychiatric day clinic treatment as option for patients with dementia by comparing characteristics of voluntarily treated patients with dementia and their respective informal caregivers between an inpatient and day clinic setting.
