No abstract. Discusses a  trial in Japan to demonstrate feasibility and efficacy of a multi‐component intervention for caregivers of people with dementia comprising CBT and positive psychology.

The article discusses research which described the process used to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of Perceived Needs Questionnaire for Dementia Informal Caregivers (PNQ-IDC) designed to measure the needs of informal dementia caregivers. Topics covered include the identification of needs for which health-care professionals could provide support, the assessment of subjective caregiver burden, and the validity and reliability of the PNQ-IDC.

Extract: Caring for an older family member can be a challenging and stressful experience, and there is a need to better support family carers in their role.(1) Drawing on a rapidly growing body of research conducted with various population groups, (2) there is reason to suggest that psychological interventions that target self‐compassion could be particularly relevant in supporting family carers of older adults.

GPs regularly encounter informal carers who, despite their legal rights to support, find it difficult to access the help available to them and receive little or no assistance. Increasing attention is being given to ‘hidden’ carers, who seem particularly unlikely to access support.
