Vince qualified as a registered mental health nurse in 2001 and has experience of nursing people in a wide variety of clinical settings. Drawing on this professional background, he joined the Open University in 2009 as an Associate Lecturer. During his time at the university he has supported students on the nursing programme and other modules relating to mental health. He was involved in developing the materials for the pioneering partnership with UNISON to deliver mental health workshops to their members and was part of a research project looking to improve the feedback and support for students who need to resubmit their end of module assessments.
In 2016, he was awarded a PhD for his thesis on ethical frameworks for dementia care at the University of Surrey.
In 2024, he was appointed as Lecturer in Health and Social Care, specialising in mental health.
