Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is having a profound impact on our daily lives, and there is an urgent need for open, critical scrutiny of the key challenges this technology presents to societies across the world.

However, it is important that such debate includes a range of voices, not only from activists, experts, corporations, NGOs and government, but perhaps more importantly, from more marginalised groups in society who in many cases have been most directly, and negatively affected by the recent accelerated adoption of such technology.

In his talk, Robots Interviewing Patients, Dr Cuayáhuitl advises that despite recent advancements in AI, robots that communicate with humans via speech, vision, and gestures still remain an illusion.

He will discuss the viability of a robot interviewing patients in a hospital-like triage environment; in particular, a data collection using the Pepper robot interviewing recruited individuals will be discussed. In addition, a data analysis will be presented using qualitative and quantitative metrics to assess the performance of the robot interviewer.

This talk will conclude by mentioning research avenues for future work in this area; Andrew Gargett will then introduce our short course in AI Matters.
