New report shows cost-effective ways to improve global learning

The 13-member Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP) recently produced a report on cost-effective approaches to improve global learning. This panel is co-chaired by the Director of the Centre for the Study of Global Development (CSGD) – Professor Kwame Akyeampong and Professor Abhijit Banerjee, Nobel prize-winning economist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). 

When governments or other stakeholders invest in education, it can be difficult finding evidence to show if their investments are cost-effective and improving education outcomes. This report aims to fill this gap and was produced by an independent cross disciplinary body composed of leading education experts from around the world.

The panel reviewed over 13000 studies and produced an accessible guide for governments and other stakeholders in low- and middle-income countries on what works in improving learning outcomes.

Many countries have limited education budgets and this report will help governments and stakeholders identify cost-effective interventions that can be implemented to suit their local contexts at sustainable costs. The report identified examples of cost-effective interventions and grouped many different types of education policies and programmes into categories from ‘Great Buys’ to ‘Bad Buys’, along with categories where more knowledge is needed.
