Profile summary

Professional biography

I am a lecturer in Spanish in the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics since 2022. Before joining the OU, I was a visiting lecturer at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, (2019-2022) and a foreign lecturer in Beijing Foreign Studies University, China (2016-2019). I have also collaborated with Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. I have experience teaching modules in linguistics Catalan and Spanish as foreign language, and intercultural communication.

Research interests

My research interests include sociolinguistics, and language learning and teaching:

  • I am interested in language attitudes, ideologies and practices in Catalan-speaking regions. I am currently working in a project that studies how language ideologies and practice have changed after the Catalan prod-independence movement, with colleagues based in Ireland and Latvia. And I collaborate with GRESIB (from the Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain) in a study on languages and young people.
  • I also study the role of language in the construction of contemporary inequalities through participatory ethnographies in the joint research project Equiling, with participants from Madrid, the Basque Country, Galicia and Catalonia.
  • I also focus on the use of minority languages, such as Catalan, in social media; what the current presence of Catalan is in social networks and why content creators decide to use a minority language, in a context where majority languages are more frequent.
  • Finally, I have been involved in research projects about Catalan as a foreign language. I've studied who learns Catalan and why outside of the Catalan-speaking areas,  and I was part of the founding committe of SERCLE, the fist association on Catalan as a foreign language.

Teaching interests

My teaching interests span a wide range of topics from linguistics to teaching forign languages. I believe that students are the center of the learning process and I combine teaching approaches to best adapt to their needs. I use collaborative learning to promote students’ retaining and responsibility, communicative and task-based methods to motivate learners, as well as intercomprehension and metalinguistic strategies to help students become plurilingual speakers.

At the OU, I am part of the Spanish 3 module (L336) team, where I collaborate with presentation and production, and I am also involved in L161: Exploring languages and cultures. I took part in the production of Spanish short courses.

I am a member of the research center MIRCo and I am involved with the Equiling project, a collaborative research project betweeen Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Deustuko Unibersitatea and Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. I collaborate in the project AULIJOVIB, a study coordinated by members from the Universitat de les Illes Balears and funded by the Balearic Government. I am a memember of the association SERCLE, which focuses on Catalan as a foreign language, and I participate in the editorial board of its journal, Resercle
