Professional biography

Dr. Thomas Ullmann is Lecturer at the Institute of Educational Technology at the Open University, UK. He researches especially in the area of Technology Enhanced Learning, with his background in empirical educational science, and computer science. His current focus of research is text analytics for learning. He is especially interested in the automated detection of reflection in writings.

He is the Data Wrangler for the Faculty of Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies supporting all three schools ‘Education, Childhood, Youth and Sport’, ‘Health, Wellbeing and Social Care’, and 'Languages and Applied Linguistics' with bespoke Learning Analytics. Furthermore, he is the Data Wrangler for LTI.

His current teaching interests are H818 ‘The network practitioner’ and H817 ‘Openness and innovation in elearning’.

Previously he was working for several EU funded projects, such as the FP7 funded Catalyst project (http://catalyst-fp7.eu/), and the STELLAR Network of Excellence project (http://www.stellarnet.eu/), as well as the FP6 funded X-Media project (http://www.x-media-project.org/). For CATALYST he led the development and evaluation of the Collective Intelligence Dashboard. During STELLAR he focused on the development of the STELLAR Science 2.0 infrastructure for researchers in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning. He also developed the social networking platform for technology-enhanced learning TELeurope.eu (http://teleurope.eu). He developed Knowledge Lenses for the SemSearch Semantic Search Engine within the X-Media Project to support information exploration tasks of knowledge engineers. For the SocialLearn project he created the ELLIMent tool, supporting mentees in developing their life long learning skills within a mentor relationship. ELLIMent builds upon the Effective Life Long Learning Inventory.
