Remote activity monitoring for family caregivers of persons living with dementia: a mixed methods, randomized controlled evaluation

The ResidentialCare Transition Module: A single-blinded randomized controlled evaluation of a telehealth support intervention for family caregivers of persons with dementia living in residential long-term care

Background: Families do not fully disengage from care responsibilities following relatives' admissions to residential long-term (RLTC) care settings such as nursing homes. Caregiver stress, depression, or other key outcomes remain stable or sometimes increase following a relative's RLTC entry.

Assessing mechanisms of benefit in adult day programs: the adult day services process and use measures

Objectives: A limitation of adult day service (ADS) research is that there remains little understanding of how these community-based long-term care programs operate to benefit clients or family caregivers (i.e. the process of ADS use). The purpose of this study was to validate the ‘ADS Process and Use Measures’ (APUM) which were developed to assess such mechanisms. Method: Participant observation and semi-structured interviews in two ADS settings resulted in qualitative data to inform a conceptual model, subscales, and Likert-scale items.

Adult Day Service Use Decreases Likelihood of a Missed Physician's Appointment Among Dementia Caregivers

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Adult day services (ADSs) that provide community‐based supervised support for persons with dementia (PWD) may also function as a respite for familial caregivers to attend to self‐care needs. Guided by a revised version of the Andersen Healthcare Utilization Model, the objective of this study was to identify the association between use of ADSs and a missed physician's appointment among family caregivers for community‐dwelling familial PWD.

Work, gender, and stress in family cancer caregiving

Goals of work: The objective of this study was to examine whether employment status and gender was associated with family cancer caregivers’ reports of stress and well-being.

Materials and methods: Using a correlational, cross-sectional survey design, this study included 183 primary caregivers (i.e., those individuals who provided the most help to persons with cancer). Caregivers were recruited in a radiation oncology cancer clinic and were administered detailed interviews that collected a wide range of information about the stress process.

Evaluating community-based programs for dementia caregivers: The cost implications of adult day services

This study analyzes the short- (3 months) and long-term (1 year) cost implications of adult day care, a community-based program that has gained attention for its positive impact on dementia caregivers. A variety of costs (e.g., adult day services, formal service use, informal sources of care, employment changes) were estimated for caregivers (n = 367 at 3 months; n = 201 at 1 year). Results found that the daily costs to reduce caregivers' role overload and depression decreased with adult day service utilization over a 1-year period.

The Longitudinal Ramifications of Stroke Caregiving: A Systematic Review

Family members assume considerable care responsibilities for relatives suffering from stroke. Although a number of quantitative and qualitative studies examine the emotional and psychological ramifications of stroke caregiving, no recent review has considered the longitudinal implications of family stroke care. The goal of this systematic review was to determine whether duration of family care is a significant predictor of stroke caregiving outcomes and if stroke caregiving outcomes change over time.
