Determinants of primary and non‐primary informal care‐giving to home‐based palliative care cancer care‐recipients in Ontario, Canada

Background: Informal care plays an important role in the care of care‐recipients. Most of the previous studies focused on the primary caregivers and ignored the importance of non‐primary caregivers. Moreover, little is known about the provision of informal care in the context of home‐based palliative care. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the provision of primary and non‐primary informal care‐giving and their respective determinants.

The determinants of the intensity of home-based informal care among cancer patients in receipt of home-based palliative care

Background: Understanding the determinants of the intensity of informal care may assist policy makers in the identification of supports for informal caregivers. Little is known about the utilization of informal care throughout the palliative care trajectory. Aim: The purpose of this study was to analyze the intensity and determinants of the use of informal care among cancer patients over the palliative care trajectory. Design: This was a longitudinal, prospective cohort design conducted in Canada.

Assessing care‐giving demands, resources and costs of family/friend caregivers for persons with mental health disorders: a scoping review

As mental health (MH) care has shifted from institutional settings to the community, families and friends are responsible for providing the majority of the care at home. The substantial literature on the adverse effects experienced by caregivers has focused mainly on psychological morbidity. Less attention has been paid to how caregivers for persons with MH disorders interact with larger social systems and the impacts of factors such as financial strain, lost time from leisure activities, and the availability of health and social services.
