Training and support for caring for a child's gastrostomy: A survey with family carers

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore family carers' experiences of training and ongoing support for caring for their child's gastrostomy, and to get their views on how this could be improved. Methods: A mixed-methods online survey with 146 family carers (eg, parents, grandparents) who care for a child with a gastrostomy. Family carers rated their own experience of training and support and made recommendations for how training and support could be improved for future families.

Economic burden of the persistent morbidity of nodding syndrome on caregivers in affected households in Northern Uganda

Background Nodding syndrome (NS), is an unexplained form of epilepsy which leads to stunted growth, cognitive decline, and a characteristic nodding of the head. Current data about its impact on households in Uganda is scarce. Therefore, this study aims to assess the economic burden of the persistent morbidity of NS on caregivers in affected households in Northern Uganda.

Looking after our old: who cares?

Informal care of older people, including a summary of research on the attitudes towards willingness to care for an elderly person among members of the general public aged 20-39 years and 40-59 years. Nurses' attitudes towards elderly care nursing are also discussed. It is suggested that nurses can influence attitudes to the elderly and engage with informal carers.
