Validation and Reliability of the 12-item Zarit Burden Interview among Informal Caregivers of Elderly Persons in Nigeria

Research on ageing in Nigeria has shown that informal care places economic and psychological strain on the caregivers of the elderly persons. However, objective method of assessment of the burden of care for the elderly among caregivers is lacking. This study was aimed at validating the 12-item Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) among caregivers of elderly persons in Nigeria in correlation with the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (Katz-ADL), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Modified Conflicts Tactics Scale for Elder Abuse (MCTS).

Weekly hours of informal caregiving and paid work, and the risk of cardiovascular disease

Background: Little is known on the association between weekly hours of informal caregiving and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective was to investigate the individual and joint effects of weekly hours of informal caregiving and paid work on the risk of CVD.; Methods: Pooled analysis with 1396 informal caregivers in gainful employment, from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health and the Whitehall II study. Informal caregiving was defined as care for an aged or disabled relative. The outcome was CVD during 10 years follow-up.

Informal caregiving as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes in individuals with favourable and unfavourable psychosocial work environments: A longitudinal multi-cohort study

Aim: To examine whether informal caregiving is associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), and whether job strain and social support at work modify the association.; Methods: Individual participant's data were pooled from three cohort studies-the French GAZEL study, the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health (SLOSH) and the British Whitehall II study-a total of 21,243 study subjects. Informal caregiving was defined as unpaid care for a closely related person.

Delay in Seeking Care for Pelvic Floor Disorders Among Caregivers

Healthcare utilization and costs in primary care patients with dementia: baseline results of the DelpHi-trial

The objectives of this cross-sectional analysis were to determine healthcare resource utilization and cost for community-dwelling patients with dementia (PWD) from a payer's and societal perspective, and to analyze the associations between costs and sociodemographic and clinical variables. Analysis of healthcare costs from a payer's perspective was based on a sample of 425 PWD, analysis of healthcare costs from societal perspective on a subsample of 254 PWD and their informal caregivers. Frequency of healthcare resource utilization was assessed by means of questionnaires.

Do patients and carers agree on symptom burden in advanced COPD?

Objective: Accurate informal carer assessment of patient symptoms is likely to be valuable for decision making in managing the high symptom burden of COPD in the home setting. Few studies have investigated agreement between patients and carers in COPD. We aimed to assess agreement between patients and carers on symptoms, and factors associated with disagreement in a population-based sample of patients with advanced COPD.; Patients and methods: This was a prospective, cross-sectional analysis of data from 119 advanced COPD patients and their carers.

Building a Rehabilitative Care Measurement Instrument to Improve the Patient Experience

Objective: To develop and test face and content validity, and user interface design of a rehabilitative care patient experience measure.; Design: Mixed methods, cross-sectional validation study that included subject matter expert input. Cognitive interviewing tested user interface and design.; Setting: Outpatient rehabilitative care settings.; Participants: Subject matter experts (n=3), health care providers (n=137), and patients and caregivers (n=5) contributed to the question development.

Life of the Second-Order Patient: Factors Impacting the Informal Caregiver

Informal caregivers (ICs) are forced to make adaptive lifestyle changes to meet the significant demand of caring for loved ones who are terminally ill. Open-ended questions were administered with 26 ICs who cared for loved ones diagnosed with terminal illnesses whose prognosis was less than six months. The results add substantive information to parsimonious literature and demonstrate a correlation with existing studies that coincide with the debilitating effects that caregiving has on the informal carer.
