The autism strategy and action plan: summary of public consultation feedback, findings and impact report

This Strategy (2013 – 2020) and Action Plan (2013 – 2016) sets out the Northern Ireland Executive’s commitment to improving services and support for people with autism in Northern Ireland. It has been prepared as a result of the Autism Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, which required the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) to lead on the development and implementation of a cross departmental Autism Strategy. The Strategy and Action Plan have been developed in accordance with articles stated in the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) to support the values of dignity, respect, independence, choice, equality and anti-discrimination for people with autism, their families and carers. The UNCRPD articles have informed the themes, strategic priorities and actions in the Strategy and Action Plan. The Strategy sets out eleven key themes: awareness; accessibility; children, young people and family; education; transitions; employability; independence, choice and control; access to justice; being part of the community; and participation and active citizenship.
