The Health Studies Research Group (HSRG)

Welcome to the HSRG! We are a multidisciplinary group researching the experience of health across the life course.

Our approach to health reflects the WHO’s definition of not being merely the absence or disease or disability, but being a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Key themes in our research include:

Transitions and wellbeing: exploring individuals’ experiences of diverse transitions and how these can influence wellbeing. Interests include: young mothers’ transition to motherhood and impacts for their identity and wellbeing; the emotional wellbeing of families during cancer diagnosis; and the wellbeing of female service personnel transitioning out of the military after injury.

Professional and formal support and wellbeing: exploring professional and formal support for wellbeing. Interests include: how practitioners understand and undertake professional mental health work in social work; how educational practitioners can support student mental wellbeing; and organisational approaches to end-of-life care.
