It assists them to develop their understanding of how principles of care should be reflected in their day-to-day practices by exploring the values of individuality, rights, choice, privacy, independence, dignity, respect and partnership. It goes on to look at the right service users have to take risks in their lives and how the care plan and risk assessment can assist to protect individuals from harm

Background: Little is known about the experiences of individuals with intellectual disabilities and additional mental health problems who are admitted for inpatient psychiatric care. In the UK such care is delivered in both generic psychiatric and specialised treatment settings.

Aims: The present study explored service users' and carers' views on in-patient psychiatric treatment received across these two settings.

Family care provision is the norm for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), even as they and their support networks grow older. As families age together, the role of primary carer frequently transitions from the parent to a sibling, as aging parents die or become too frail to provide continued support. The purpose of this paper is to explore the transition in care from the perspective of a sibling who has replaced parents as the primary carer for an individual aging with I/DD.

Reports on a support scheme in Sheffield for family carers over the age of 70, who care for a person with learning difficulties. The scheme won the carers category at this year's Community Care awards.

Involving service users and carers in the education and training of social workers is higher on the agenda in developed countries than ever before. Higher education institutions that run these programmes are required to involve service users and carers at all levels of the design and delivery of the programmes. The experiences of user involvement in social work education in the countries of transition, such as Macedonia, are however lacking.

Objectives: Physical exercise has been associated with a range of positive outcomes including improvements in psychological well-being. The aim of the present study was to review current evidence on the effects of physical activity interventions for carers of people with dementia.

Liveability is a NHS nurse-led service providing instructor-led exercise classes and gym sessions in Liverpool. The service collaborated with a European research project Innovate Dementia to increased access to Liveability for people living with dementia and to evaluate the benefits for those taking part in the programme. The evaluation found that involvement in the exercise programme brought many benefits for individuals with dementia and their carers. Core themes are discussed in relation to enjoyment and recreation and improved fitness and cognition.

Family carers of people with dementia may take on this role without understanding how it will evolve or how to obtain support. Hospitalisation of the person with dementia can not only compound carers’ concerns, but also provides an opportunity for their needs to be addressed.

A new initiative to support carers in the United States mirrors the national carers strategy in the UK. But there are important differences, such as the role of insurance in the provision of long term care. Looks at some recent research studies, in particular a study to understand how long-term care insurance for disabled older people can affect the lives of their working care givers.
