This audit report examines councils’ progress in implementing the self-directed support strategy in Scotland and their readiness for the Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Act 2013. It focuses on councils because they have the lead role, working in partnership with users, carers, third and private sector providers, NHS boards and other organisations. The audit work was carried out between December 2013 and February 2014.

The aim of this study was to investigate the amount of time formal caregivers spend addressing activities of day-to-day care activities for persons with Down's syndrome (DS) with and without Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Caregivers completed for 63 persons with DS and AD, and 61 persons with DS without AD, the Caregiving Activity Survey-Intellectual Disability (CAS-ID). Data was also gathered on co-morbid conditions. Regression analysis was used to understand predictors of increased time spent on day-to-day caregiving.

Staffordshire's Welfare to Work Joint Investment Plan is an inter‐agency approach to improving job opportunities for disabled people and carers, emphasising the need for their participation in this process. A partnership with Staffordshire University has enabled disabled people to acquire research skills and survey the views of other disabled people on barriers to employment and strategies to overcome them. The article shares this innovative approach to participation and welfare to work.

Examines the effect of carer stress management using the Carers' Checklist (Hodgson et al 1998) as a measure of outcome. Pre-course and post-course questionnaires were used with carers, who agreed to attend a structured stress management course. The carers who attended demonstrated a better awareness and understanding of stress and its management following the course. Positive measures of outcome were also determined by a decrease in the carers' rating in frequency of dementia-related problems, carer burden of dementia-related problems and overall carer burden.

Direct payments are crucial to achieving the Government's aim to increase independence, choice and control for service users and their carers through allowing them the opportunity to arrange their own personalised care. The Health and Social Care Act 2008 extends the availability of direct payments to those people who lack the capacity to consent to their receipt.

This briefing paper provides information for family carers who are supporting a teenager or young adult with severe learning disabilities and behaviour described as challenging, who is approaching transition to adult services. It aims to help carers understand what expect from local services, to help identify what 'good' services look like, to help them ask for the support they and their family need and to help them work in partnership with the professionals.
