Teacher educators and OER in East Africa: Interrogating pedagogic change

PI Freda Wolfenden Co-Is Alison Buckler, Jane Cullen and Pritee Auckloo (Mauritius Institute of Education).

This study, funded by ROER4D (Research on OER for Development) examined the use of open education resources (OER) in six teacher education institutions in Mauritius, Tanzania and Uganda. It explored how and when teacher educators engaged with OER, the factors that supported and constrained OER engagement, and the impact of this engagement on their practice.

Developing teachers as agents of social justice in Ghana

PI Alison Buckler.

The focus of this Spencer Foundation funded research (2014-2015) was on how Ghanaian colleges of education could enhance student-teachers’ agency to improve the educational outcomes of disadvantaged children. A key proposal within UNESCO’s 2014 EFA Report was that, in order to reduce inequality, teacher preparation must improve teachers’ ability to support children from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. This project examined how Ghanaian student-teachers understand and are being prepared to respond to diverse classrooms. The main publications are forthcoming, but some of the data has been written up within Learning and Teaching Around the World.
