Whether you are studying for pleasure, to refresh your skills or to add another string to your bow, our language, culture and communication short courses are the perfect way to start your learning journey with the OU.

We offer language short courses from beginners to advanced level in Italian, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Welsh, as well as a wide range of courses in languages-related subjects such as intercultural communication and the use of AI in the workplace. You can enrol on a short course at any time.

Our courses are written by our leading academics and are designed to fit around your life. The courses are entirely online and, in only a few hours’ study each week, you’ll learn to hold conversations on everyday topics in your chosen language. You’ll also develop a better understanding of the countries where these languages are spoken. All our courses follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This way you can confidently choose the right course for your level of knowledge, from absolute beginner (A1) all the way to being practically fluent (C2). In addition to language courses, we offer courses in culture and communications to enhance your ability to work across cultures and artificial intelligence which delves into the rise (and impact) of AI on society.  

On successful completion of our short courses, you will receive a digital badge to show your participation and completion of the course. Our digital badges can be used as a certificate for your professional development, shared on social media or added to your email signature.
