Language Toolkit wins 2020 Fred Mulder Award for Best Open Practice

A group of colleagues from the School of Languages and Applied Linguistics (LAL) has developed a free toolkit, ‘Moving your language learning online’ which has received a Best Open Educational Practice award by GO-GN.

Researching public understanding of COVID-19 restrictions

New book published: A Multilingual Decameron

Written during the pandemic, the book contains stories written by OU students, featuring at least one of the languages taught in the School.

The Language of Protest Wins Bronze at EVCOM Clarion Awards 2020

Dr Philip Seargeant has been awarded Bronze in the Education and Training category at the 2020 EVCOM Clarion Awards for his short documentary film, ‘The Language of Protest’, produced in collaboration with Hamlett Films. The film, which was shot pre-lockdown and focuses predominantly on protests around the climate crisis, is an insightful look at political communication in the era of the protest.

New research funding to explore why European universities are teaching in English

Dr Kristina Hultgren has been awarded a prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, for over £1.1mn, to explore why the use of English as a teaching language in non-English-speaking European countries is increasing, despite students struggling to understand it.
