In addition to your observation and discussion of your student’s practice, your student is required to present a range of evidence in their portfolio, which must include written evidence to support demonstration of their achievement of NMC outcomes or proficiencies at the required Bondy level. It is important that you review the appropriateness of the evidence that your student is compiling for their portfolio, as this will assist you in making your decisions about their achievement of the outcomes or proficiencies. This includes the evidence your student will be compiling when learning in practice takes place outside your practice area.
As well as your observation and discussion of your student’s practice and review of their collated evidence for their portfolio, you must also monitor their progress against the Essential Skills Clusters criteria (NMC 2007), in their Profile of Practice Skills booklet.
The evidence in the portfolio, all of which you may not have personally witnessed, and the completed Profile of Practice Skills booklet form an extremely useful reference of achievements to which you can refer.
Your Programme Tutor is an invaluable resource in supporting you in skilled decision-making about the quality and relevance of evidence and assessment outcomes, so do seek their help and advice about these crucial mentor responsibilities.
