Student assessment

Your student will be assessed in theory and in practice. For each theory module, your student will complete a number of Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs). The number of TMAs varies according to the academic credit rating of the particular theory module, so for example a 60 credit module will have more TMAs than a 30 credit module. The TMAs are marked by the Module Tutor for that particular module. Your student must achieve an average of 40% for the TMAs in order to pass each theory module. In addition, at the end of each theory module there is an end of module assessment (EMA) which consists of a 3 hour exam or an end of module assignment. The pass mark is 40%. Your student must pass the EMA too, in order to pass each module.

The practice modules are assessed in a number of ways. Your student must complete a number of TMAs. As with theory modules, your student must achieve an average of 40% for the TMAs in order to pass. In addition your student will also complete a series of interactive computer-marked assignments (iCMAs). The marks for these form a proportion of the marks awarded for the TMAs. At the end of each practice module your student must submit an end of module practice focused assignment (EMA) or sit a 3 hour exam. Again the pass mark is 40%.

Your student must also demonstrate, through submission of a structured portfolio, that all the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements for practice alongside achievement of the defined level of competency and related Essential Skills Cluster’s criteria have all been successfully completed. You will play a major role in supporting your student to fulfil the requirements of the portfolio and this will be explored in more detail in the sections of this Mentor Induction on Practice learning and Assessment in practice. Your student must pass the TMAs, the EMA and the portfolio in order to pass each practice module.
