Roles and responsibilities of the Staff Tutor/Staff Tutor Nursing/Regional Education Managers

Staff Tutors / Staff Tutors Nursing / Regional Education Managers:

  • Are registered nurses, appointed by the university who have a suitable qualification and expertise to co-ordinate and manage the delivery of the pre-registration nursing programme
  • Liaise with Employers to ensure effective partnership working in delivery of the programme at a local level
  • Line manage Practice Tutors and Module Tutors and may be contacted by employing organisations if concerns arise regarding the performance of these OU members of staff; see p.12 of Working with Partners (pdf) for contact details 
  • Ensure that students:
    – Meet the requirements of the statutory bodies / nation bodies for entry to the programme
    – Receive the support they need to progress academically and in meeting practice learning requirements
    – Meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council for entry to the register.
  • Ensure that practice areas used for practice learning are audited in line with the statutory/nation body requirements
  • Seek confirmation that mentors/sign-off mentors are annotated on local mentor registers and are appropriately prepared for their role
  • Ensure that mentors who will undertake summative assessment of student performance are fully compliant with NMC mentor standards throughout the time they are supporting an OU student.
