Summary

This section has introduced you to the titles and roles of those staff who most closely support the students throughout the duration of the pre-registration nursing programme:

  • Mentor
  • Practice supervisor
  • Practice tutor
  • Module tutor

It has also explained the roles of:

  • the Employer link, who is a named individual within the student’s employing organisation
  • the student’s manager e.g. ward sister, team leader, department manager
  • the Staff Tutor/Regional Education Manager who line manages the module tutors and practice tutors
  • service users, who provide important feedback about a student’s performance and development in practice

and most importantly has explained the roles and responsibilities of the student.

You have also had the opportunity to consider who you would suggest that a student contacts for a range of different issues. Remember, if an OU student approaches you for advice and you are not certain who the best person is to contact then you too have support. Contact the student’s Practice Tutor in the first instance. However if the Practice Tutor does not respond or is unable to answer your query then do contact your regional Staff Tutor/ Regional Education Manager via the regional office (page 14) (pdf).

Outcomes

So now you have completed this part of the induction do you feel able to:

  • identify and know the responsibilities of those staff who work most closely with the students

  • advise students who to contact in relation to a variety of different situations?
